The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not go ahead if Russia invades Ukraine, the United States warned last night as NATO leaders discussed strengthening defense forces in Europe.
Ned Price, a spokesman for the State Department, said the Biden administration would work with Germany to ensure the project was stopped.
“I want to be very clear: if Russia invades Ukraine in one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward,” he told NPR. “I will not go into the details. We will work with Germany to ensure that it does not move forward.”
Germany has been the most reluctant force to take a tough stance on Russia, but increasing pressure from allies is changing its calculations on the nearly completed pipeline, which is widely seen
