At least one died in a bridge collision between Richmond and San Rafael

At least one person died Wednesday after a collision involving a small car and a truck with large rig closed Interstate 580 lanes on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, authorities said.

Just after noon. At 6:55 p.m., officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to reports of the collision and a related fire in eastbound lanes at the bridge’s center span.

Shortly after the officers arrived, a Sig alarm was issued at. 19:03, said CHP officer Damian Johnston.

Firefighters also responded to the crash site, but at least one person was pronounced dead despite emergency life-saving measures, Johnston said.

There was no estimated time for reopening lanes for traffic, and drivers were advised to avoid the area or take either the Golden Gate Bridge or Eastbound Highway 37 as alternative routes.
