YouTube’s path to parity with Twitch continues as the company announces three updates exclusively for streaming.

These updates will expand the availability of an existing feature and bring two new features to live streams on YouTube.

The new tools to be introduced will make it easier for content producers to interact with their live audience and keep them engaged throughout the stream.

YouTube streaming updates include:

  • Voting time
  • Chat for subscribers only
  • Clip extension feature

YouTube is not breaking new features with these features. Rather, it is caught up in the usual stuff offered by streaming competitors like Twitch.

Here’s more information about these updates and how they can improve your next YouTube stream.

Three new features for YouTube streaming

Live polls in chat

YouTube channels can now create and manage live broadcasts and premieres.

For example, live polls can be used to ask your audience for their opinion on a current topic of discussion.

Follow these steps to create a live survey:

  • Plan or start a streaming or premiere.
  • Tap at the bottom of the chat window Create a survey.
  • Create a query and then click Ask your community.
  • Tap End the survey from the banner at the top of the conversation to see the results.

Queries can have 2 to 4 options and are only displayed live. They don’t show up in live chat replays.

Direct queries can only be created from YouTube on a computer, not a mobile device.

Chat for subscribers only

The new ability to make live chats only available to subscribers can help monitor real-time conversation and create new connections.

This feature can be enabled during streaming setup or as a live broadcast – directly from the Live Control Room settings.

To turn on subscriber-only chat:

  • Go to the Live Control Room.
  • Click in the live stream Edit.
  • Click Live chat.
  • Under Who can send the message, select Subscribers.
  • Optional: Select how long viewers must subscribe before they can send live chat messages.
  • Click Save.

You can choose how long (hours, days, weeks, months, years) people need to subscribe before they can send live chat messages.

When a subscriber-only chat is enabled, the public is notified that it is on and how long they need to be subscribed to send messages.

Clip extension

YouTube is expanding the Clips feature, a feature that has been tested with a limited number of content providers.

Clips allow viewers to select a 5-60 second content segment (both video downloads and streaming) that can be shared with others on YouTube and third-party platforms.

Once channels have enabled clips, viewers can select a clip icon for the video and select the part where the clip will be changed.

Repeat the loop repeatedly, by replaying the original video on the watch page, and all viewer clip clips are assigned to the original video.
