When choosing an LMS platform for your site, it’s important to consider at least a few popular options and compare them to get a better idea of which one fits your requirements.
We understand this, which is why we are doing a whole series of comparisons of LearnDash (the most popular LMS platform) to several other platforms in this niche.
We’ve already compared it to Moodle and Teachable in our last two articles, and now it’s time to compare it to Tutor LMS.
This comparison is very interesting because both LearnDash and Tutor LMS use the same core function to provide a solid LMS experience.
Don’t you get it? Don’t worry, you’ll get it as soon as we make progress in our comparison.
Let’s get started!
LearnDash vs TutorLMS – Basic Differences
If we see the baseline, there are no big differences between the two platforms because both use WordPress to create a robust and scalable LMS solution.
Unlike other LMS options that are self-hosted platforms (i.e., Learnable) or full-fledged open source LMS platforms (i.e., Moodle), here LearnDash competes with one built on the same playground it controls.
As a result, there are not too many differences in the core functions of these two LMS options.
With this in mind, we dig deep into our comparison to find out which platform is best among them.
1. LearnDash vs. TutorLMS – Features and Functionality
LearnDash and Tutor LMS have a long list of both common and unique features.
But as you can see from the list below, the uniqueness part clearly leans in favor of LearnDash. It has many features that are not available in Tutor LMS that give it a clear edge over the first criteria of comparison.
- Drag and drop the course builder
- Synchronous learning
- Miscellaneous learning
- Learning portals
- Built-in course writing function
LearnDash’s unique features:
LearnDash has a long list of unique features compared to TutorLMS. The largest of them are:
- Mobile learning features
- SCORM compatibility
- Lots of extensibility with extensions
Not all of these features are available in TutorLMS.
Unique features in TutorLMS
TutorLMS does not have a unique feature that is not available in LearnDash. All of its features are already built into the core functionality of LearnDash or WordPress, so there’s nothing to mention here.
Winner – LearnDash.
2. LearnDash vs TutorLMS – content creation and management
In terms of course creation and management features, both LearnDash and Tutor LMS provide all the features you need to create and manage course content properly.
Both include a drag-and-drop course builder tool, multimedia features, an advanced quiz system, and other necessary course management features.
However, both have some unique features that can make your job easier or harder depending on what you’re looking for.
Let’s look at LearnDash first.
- It comes with a unique course scheduling a feature that allows you to automatically deliver lessons to students on a predetermined schedule.
- It also has a large library of extensions and themes which can extend its content creation capabilities. The same does not apply to Tutor LMS.
However, this does not mean that Tutor LMS does not have unique course creation and management features.
- It allows affull course preview before you publish your course so you understand what it looks like and what it feels like to be published.
- It has also got more advanced quiz system which allows you to create quizzes that are completely unique in nature, ie quizzes based on image matching, quizzes based on image matching, fill in blanks, etc.
In short, there is no clear winner between the two LMS platforms in these departments. The winner can be either of these depending on your requirements.
Winner – None.
3. LearnDash vs TutorLMS – ease of use
Both TutorLMS and LearnDash are very easy-to-use LMS platforms, mainly because they are both based on WordPress – the most easy-to-use CMS.
For this reason, both offer similar and unparalleled ease of use. The interface of both Tutor LMS and LearnDash is very intuitive, simple and well honed.
In addition, they have detailed documentation available to help you get started if you get stuck somewhere (or if you prefer a guided approach to learning something instead of doing it yourself).
Winner – None.
4. LearnDash vs TutorLMS support
TutorLMS customer support reviews are not very favorable. While they claim to provide the most professional quality support via email and chat, user reviews of their support are not very positive.
LearnDash, on the other hand, has a solid reputation for customer service. It has very positive reviews of its customer service on all popular review sites and online forums.
In addition, they also have a large number of loyal users and developers who can help you if something goes wrong and you can’t find repair instructions.
Winner – LearnDash.
5. LearnDash vs TutorLMS – selling courses
Because both the LearnDash and Tutor LMS are based on WordPress, courses can be sold by integrating WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads (EDD), and other popular WordPress eCommerce extensions.
And as a result, the functionality of e-commerce remains almost the same on both platforms.
Both platforms also work with multiple payment gateways (e.g. PayPal, Stripe, etc.) and generate all the necessary sales reports.
Both also have features to share your income with instructors from the LMS control panel (Tutor LMS allows it on a native basis, while LearnDash has some add-ons for the same), so there’s not much difference between the two of them in this area.
Winner – None.
6. LearnDash vs TutorLMS – Gamification
Gaming refers to the process of making a learning experience interactive and fun through rewards, certificates, badges, awards, and other techniques that reward the learner for completing a particular milestone.
This increases engagement and improves the quality of the learning experience. LearnDash includes built-in game features that make learning fun and rewarding.
Features like Course Points, Scoreboard, Badges, and Certificates are already built into it, and if you want more features, there’s a long list of extensions that can be used to add them.
On the other hand, TutorLMS does not have very limited game functions. Students will only be rewarded with certificates and grade activities. Needless to say, with this limited function, you cannot create the best possible learning experience for students.
Winner – LearnDash.
7. LearnDash vs TutorLMS – Pricing
Another area between these two LMS platforms is price.
While both are premium WordPress plug-ins, there is a significant difference not only in license fees but also in the structure of license fees. Here is a comparison of the available licenses:
|License type||LearnDash||Instructor LMS|
|Single site license||
As you can see, the biggest difference between the pricing of LearnDash and Tutor LMS is that Tutor LMS also has lifetime licensing options that allow you to purchase and use it for as long as you want.
Tutor LMS also exceeds affordability criteria – all of its licensing options are cheaper than LearnDash.
Winner – Tutor LMS.
Before we come to our conclusion and decide which of these platforms is the better choice for creating an e-Learning site, it is better to quickly look at the pros and cons of both of these platforms based on the information provided above. This will make it easier to understand what we say in our judgment, so let’s do it:

|1. Simple interface||1. More expensive than Tutor LMS|
|2. Playing||2. No lifetime license – you still have to pay annually|
|3. SCORM compliant|
|4. Dozens of add-ons to expand the function|
|5. Reliable support|
Pros and cons of Tutor LMS
