“Intel, Microsoft, Oracle – you see this pattern,” he said.
Even before a founder leaves, executives feel a company is approaching a new era, he said.
“People have the idea that Jeff is going to be in transition, and that gets people to start thinking about other options,” he said, adding that as businesses grow, leaders can often find less bureaucracy and more financial benefits if they leave.
“We have had and continue to have remarkable retention and continuity of leadership in the company,” said Chris Oster, an Amazon spokesperson. The average term of office is 10 years for vice presidents and over 17 years for senior vice presidents, he added.
Mr. Bezos has long played on the longevity of MPs. During a forum in 2017, an employee asked him about the lack of diversity within his management team, known as the S-Team, which was almost exclusively white and male, and Mr. Bezos mentionned it was an advantage that his main deputies had been by his side for years.
Any transition within the team, he said, “would happen in a very gradual fashion over a long period of time.”
In recent years, Mr. Bezos took a step back much of Amazon’s day-to-day activities, focusing instead on strategic projects and outside companies, such as its space start-up, Blue Origin, giving even more autonomy to its deputies.
Mr. Bezos, 57 years old, get back to business at the start of the pandemic. But in February, he ad that he planned to step down from Amazon management and become executive chairman of the company’s board. July 20, it is scheduled steal aboard his rocket company’s first manned space flight.
Mr Bezos’ transfer came shortly after Mr Wilke, long regarded as a potential successor, announced his departure.
