People had a lot of extra time for themselves last year, and much of it was spent on their phones.

By CleverTap, time spent on mobile applications increased across all generations in 2020. Gen Z increased its mobile phone usage by 16%, Millenialls by 18%, and activity in child age groups and Gen X increased by 30%.

So where did people spend all that extra time? CleverTap published blog post sharing statistics for all mobile usage trends from 2020 onwards. As you might expect, the time spent on Zoom and Google Meet increased significantly as downloads and usage increased. Nor is it surprising that TokTok was the world’s most downloaded social media app.

TikTok was launched as soon as the United States got locked in, and that’s when the huge growth in downloads and usage began.

  • Since April 2020, TikTokia had been downloaded more than two billion times from the Apple App Store and Google Play.
  • TikTok had an estimated 65.9 million active users per month in the United States in 2020.
  • TikTok will have 37.3 million Gen Z users per month by the end of 2021, compared to 33.3 million on Instagram.

TikTok is clearly a place where brands can be right now, especially if your target audience is Gen Z. Even more so if your target audience is in the United States.

As you can see from the image below, the United States seems to be TikTok’s most popular fan.

The TikTok trend started in 2020 and is definitely here to stay.
