this is New stuff from DO.

Application platform is a hosting product, no surprise, but it has some features that are inspired by Jamstack in the best possible way, as well as a number of unique and powerful features. Let’s start with a few basics:

  • Static sites can be hosted at a free level
  • Automatic HTTPS
  • Global CDN (Cloudflare is ahead, so you’re DDoS safe)
  • Enable from Git

Developers like me love these things these days. Take the most difficult, effortless, fun aspects of web development and do them completely for me.

And now for the drum:

  • This is not just for static sites: it is for PHP, Nodes, Python, Ruby, Go, Docker Containers, etc.
  • You don’t have to configure and update things, these are ready-made boxes for those technologies.
  • You can scale anywhere.
  • You don’t pay for a team spot. Unlimited team member. You pay according to usage, such as bandwidth and construction time.

Installing a static site is very easy

You immediately click on it from GitHub (or GitLab or Docker Hub), which is great right away, and you leave.

Then we get our first little hint about something compelling right away:

But let’s say we don’t need it right away, we can go with a free plan and get this out.

The site builds and you see the logs:

And lookie that my static site is LIVE!

Suppose my site needs to complete the actual compilation process? That, and many more configurations will come in “App Spec” format. Here I would like to include these build commands, change Git data, deployment zones and download more.

About this database …

Wasn’t it interesting to see how the installation steps for this static site suggested adding a database? So many websites need some kind of data storage, and developers can often find some sort of cloud storage available that works well with their application. With the Digital Ocean application platform, it can coexist with a static application.

It is called a component.

As you can see, it can be, but it doesn’t have to be a database. It can be another type of server! Here I could pop a PostgreSQL DB there for only $ 7 / month.

If you need to add an internal or external service, you can use it to add it through another Git repo that you connect. Oh, what a modern system you now have. The front and back can each be mounted separately directly through the Git.

This also applies to server-side applications.

This feels great to me! I get the same kind of easy DX ID I get from static sites, but with Python or Ruby on Rails, for example. Free commissioning! Server Boxes I don’t have to configure and manage myself!

There seems to be a pretty happy path to the host environment for many items.
