As a result of the economic impact of COVID-19, many people find themselves looking for new jobs. One bright spot in the job search process is the steady growth of the cloud computing industry. Here are the key credentials for a tech job search.
Unlock Cloud Certification – Key Identifier for Technical Job Search
The cloud computing industry offers opportunities for those with direct cloud skills, and increasingly, for those not in IT roles. Non-IT roles include sales or marketing skills, where understanding of the cloud is an emerging asset.
In fact, according to LinkedIn, cloud computing remains one of the technical skills businesses need most, and Forrester analysts to predict the industry will return to hypergrowth in 2021, opening up even more opportunities.
Various digital and virtual training options are available for those interested in upgrading or retraining for the cloud.
These courses, and these dedicated studies, can be the launching pad for obtaining industry certification degrees. An enhanced degree can help a candidate stand out from other candidates or pursue internal promotion.
Obtaining a cloud industry certification can not only increase the chances of finding a job, but research shows that certifications pave the way for higher wages and provide a competitive advantage.
It is not only the certified person who benefits; 93 percent of organizational decision makers agree that certified team members add value that goes beyond the cost of certification (Global knowledge).
Complete an industry certification
If you are taking cloud training for industry certification, here are five tips to help you increase your success in obtaining certification. These tips are based on my over ten years of experience in the cloud and developing learning solutions for organizations, partners and learners.
Tip # 1: Plan goals and associate them with specific certifications
Before jumping into online classes or reading technical white papers, visualize your goals and what you want success to look like. Then go back to understand the steps necessary to achieve your goals.
Think about your personal interest in IT and align it with the most demanded cloud roles. From there, you can identify the appropriate industry certification that will help validate your skills and set you apart when applying for positions.
- Interest: creation of cloud applications and architectures
- Cloud role sought: designer or cloud architect
- Relevant Certification: AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate
Tip # 2: Take advantage of the learning materials at your own pace
Now that you’ve identified your goal and certification, look no further than your computer to access training materials, on-demand and live lessons, and practice tests.
Digital training enables learners to develop skills and knowledge for any area of the cloud. You will master machine learning, networking, security and more. You can acquire this knowledge through short, self-paced, and often free, courses offered by various learning and cloud providers.
Your prescribed study and learning path
Many training providers offer recommended learning paths that align with different roles – or industry certifications based on the field. Taking the right path will ensure that your study efforts align with the desired finish line.
You can also look for an official exam guide, which offers detailed and prescriptive advice on the areas covered by the exam to help you prioritize your study. Research which training provider and training program best prepares you to pass industry certification.
Tip # 3: Find a community
You are not alone in this case! In addition to the online study resources, there is also a myriad of online communities where you can connect with people who are also preparing for a certification exam, whether it’s their first or fifth. .
These groups can give you insider knowledge about the most important aspects of studying, useful resources for making the most of your study time. You will learn what the testing experience really looks like and how to market your industry certification once obtained.
LinkedIn Groups and Industry-Specific Certification Subreddits are great places to find an online community.
You can also attend a user group meeting or even join one of the groups.
Tip # 4: Establish Consistent Study Habits
The time required for courses and practical experience will vary depending on the certification.
A good rule of thumb is to allow yourself 15 to 20 hours to study and prepare for the basic exams, and 5 times that amount for an associate level exam.
For a professional or specialist level exam, allow 5 times more time than you had prepared for an associated level.
Succeeding on exam day is directly related not only to the hours set aside for study, but also to the approach you use.
Recommended study tips include:
- Define time blocks dedicated to the study. Treat study time like a boss-mandated business meeting – non-negotiable.
- Find a place that promotes motivation to study and eliminates distractions.
- Study at the “right” time. Night owls may try a few units when the rest of the house is asleep.
- Involve others when appropriate. Some classes benefit from social interactions beyond the virtual classroom, and some may find that the content resonates more when discussed or practiced with friends or family.
- Take practice certification exams to increase confidence in the knowledge you have retained and the testing process. Typically, practice exams can be repeated as many times as needed to help a learner feel comfortable with the test format and the information covered.
Tip # 5: Get “hands on” experience before test day
Go further in your studies by gaining hands-on experience with technology. According to the certification, hands-on experience not only increases the chances of success, but it is also essential to maintain your deeper knowledge.
Always do your labs.
Sign up for lab-style training (perhaps offered virtually at the moment, with a live instructor) to familiarize yourself with the technology in real-world scenarios.
Finally, remember to identify a friend or professional mentor who works with technology and asks how they use it on a daily basis. Take the opportunity to understand the individual pros and cons and seek advice on how to successfully complete training and certification.
Achieve your goals
Update yourself and your skills
You’ll want to update yourself by learning new skills and taking advantage of growing careers in the cloud.
Validating a demonstrable level of cloud skills through industry certification can provide a clear competitive advantage in the job market.
