Device makers like Apple seem to love to release phones in ever larger sizes. This is why a portable battery charger or power bank is often a more convenient purchase for your iPhone than battery case, which increase battery capacity but tend to make a phone very heavy and bulky to carry.

To that end, I’ve rounded up the best portable power banks and battery chargers that will add a bit more oomph to your iPhone’s battery life. Although they cost more, I personally like batteries that have a built-in Lightning cable, so I don’t have to worry about carrying a charging cable around quickly. charging when I don’t have enough power. But I’ve also included a few budget choices for those who want to spend as little as possible to charge their iPhone via the power pack.

Although we have a similar list of best power banks for android phones, any portable battery here without a built-in Lightning cable will work fine while charging an Android smartphone (or any other portable gadget), as long as you provide a compatible smartphone cable.

Mophie’s PowerStation Plus is a few years old and discontinued, which means you can find some great deals on it – just make sure you don’t buy a refurbished model. While it doesn’t have fast charging capability, it has a fabric finish and houses a 6,040mAh battery, as well as a built-in Lightning connector. Previously, if you bought one of Apple’s exclusive versions (it’s no longer available), the battery easily charged an iPhone and iPad with any Lightning cable, rather than Micro USB. the version on Amazon fees via an included Micro USB cable. With the USB port, you can charge or recharge two devices at once, including your latest iPhone.

The biggest 10,000 mAh PowerStation Plus XL is also available on Amazon, but it is thicker. The XL can be fully charged wirelessly on a wireless charging cradle while the standard PowerStation Plus does not have wireless charging.

The Anker PowerCore Slim 10,000mAh costs $ 16 on Amazon when you apply a $ 2 coupon at checkout. While it’s thicker than some of the portable chargers in this roundup, it’s incredibly thin for a 10,000mAh cell phone charger, and it has a USB-C input to charge your smartphone’s battery, but no USB-C output. No cables are included.

Aukey presents its PB-N83 Mini 10,000mAh USB-C Power Bank as “the smallest and lightest 10,000mAh portable charger”. I’m not sure it’s considered the smallest in the world, but its footprint is smaller than a credit card. That said, it is 1.18 inches (30mm) thick and has weight. Still, it slips fairly easily into a pocket and has both an 18-watt USB-C Power Delivery port and Quick Charge 3.0 USB-A. The input-output USB-C port can be used as a pass-through port so that you can charge the power bank and a device at the same time.

The PB-N83 costs around $ 17. This is a great price for a fast charging 10,000mAh PD power bank. A USB-A to USB-C cable is included for charging, and owners of new iPhone 12 models can use the USB-C to Lightning cable included with new iPhones to quickly charge their phones through the USB-C PD port on the power bank. I loaded the iPhone 12 Pro to about 60% in 30 minutes.

This power bank from Aukey offers wired and wireless charging options. If you use the USB-C port, you can get 18 watts of charging. Go wireless and put your phone on the charging dock battery and it will charge wirelessly at 10 watts, which is where the iPhone is currently peaking for wireless charging. You pay extra, but this phone charger has a massive battery (20,000mAh), a built-in kickstand, and a digital display showing how much charge is left. It comes with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable, but you’ll need to provide an adapter to charge it.

Aukey’s smallest cordless 10,000 mAh portable charger with foldable stand sells for around $ 30 after you apply an instant coupon for $ 10 off.

This Anker model is basically an oversized wall charger that plugs in like an AC adapter. We have used and loved the old version of 5000 mAh with two USB-A ports, which sells for between $ 26 and $ 40, depending on the color choice. But the new model doubles the capacity to 10,000mAh and adds a USB-C port. This allows you to simultaneously charge two devices such as your phone and a secondary connected gadget (or two phones). There is also a small LED indicator on the side that allows you to check the charge level with the push of a button.

MyCharge HubPlus Turbo is the company’s latest power bank with a built-in foldable wall outlet and Lightning and USB-C cables. The wall charger is called the Turbo because it has Power Delivery and Quick Charge 3.0 (USB-C cable) which provide fast charging speeds, which means up to 75% faster charging speed than the standard charger. 5 volt power supplied with most iPhones. This wall charger has a 6,700 mAh battery.

The Champ portable charger from Nimble uses recycled plastic in its construction. You have to pay a bit more to go green, but this is a nice compact 10,000mAh charger that features PD 4.0 (18-watt) fast charging through its single USB-C port. Also, the coupon CNET25 you will get 25% off at checkout.

Nimble also sells higher capacity batteries.

The Atom XS is available in two versions: a smaller 800mAh model and a larger 1300mAh model. These are designed to fit on a key fob and are roughly the size of an electronic car key. But be careful, they won’t fully charge your phone. The idea is to have them on hand for charging in case your phone dies and you need some juice to get you through for a few hours.

Both Atom XS models have a built-in Lightning connector and won’t weigh down your phone while charging. At around $ 40 for the larger 1,300mAh output variant (the one I would go for), the Atom XS is quite expensive, and you might be disappointed that it only charges some of the bigger iPhones. at about 25%. But again, it’s all about the convenience of having a small battery charger for emergency charging purposes. A model with USB-C charging is slightly cheaper at $ 35.

What to look for

Here are a few things to keep in mind when purchasing a battery or power bank:

  • Higher output power (mAh, short for milliampere-hours) means more charges, but also heavier weight.
  • For the latest iPhones (everything after iPhone 7), you need to buy a battery with a capacity of at least 3000mAh, which should give you at least a full charge for one device. With the exception of the Atom XS, all of the models shown above have achieved this mark.
  • Multiple built-in charging cables or USB output ports will allow you to charge more than one device at a time.
  • These products all use rechargeable lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries and should therefore always be packed in hand luggage when traveling. Airlines and regulators are increasingly banning lithium-ion batteries in checked baggage.
  • If you want maximum power output, go for chargers with USB-C PD (power supply) models, which should charge almost any small device (smaller than a laptop), including a tablet or Nintendo Switch.
