Elevate your technology and enterprise data strategy to Transform 2021.
Niantic and Hasbro have teamed up to create the augmented reality mobile game Transformers: Heavy Metal. This is yet another location based game in the style of Niantic Entrance, Pokémon Go, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite mobile games.
Very Very Spaceship leads game development and Tomy is Niantic’s publishing partner in Japan. The game brings Optimus Prime and Bumblebee to life in the real world via the Niantic Lightship platform, which layers animated characters in the real world.
In the title, players will join the Guardian Network, a group of humans who banded together with the Autobots in a war against the Decepticons. As the Guardian, players will discover hidden regions across the Earth to find resources and fight Decepticons in turn-based, solo or with friends battles. The game will use designs from G1.
With a global launch slated for later this year, Transformers: Heavy Metal will soon enter a soft launch in select markets. Tomy will work with Niantic on the Japanese release, and Seattle-based Very Very Spaceship for the making of the game. He uses Lightship, Niantic’s planet-wide AR platform that enables AR, Real-time 3D mapping and multiplayer social experiences. With Niantic Lightship ARDK, developers can create their own AR worlds and experiences using tools that take advantage of location, environmental context, and shared multiplayer views.
I asked Niantic why he chose Transformers for his next game. In an email response, executive producer Phil Hong said, “Transformers is a beloved global entertainment franchise that’s fun, a little bit irreverent. and has a message that matches Niantic’s values, that of ‘Save the Earth, Save Humanity’. We saw an opportunity to bring the best of what we do with location-based games and AR to a game that’s different from what we’ve done before. Transformers: Heavy Metal adds diversity to our roster, as it is a high action mobile game, but it will also be familiar to gamers given that exploring the world and fighting the Decepticon invasion is one. key pillars of the game.
