Phil Hong, Executive Producer of Niantic, said, “Thinking of the franchises that it would be amazing to bring augmented reality to life, Transformers was obvious. It will be a Transformers game like no other, an AR game where you can team up with Bumblebee and the Autobots in the real world, powered by the Niantic Lightship platform.

Niantic’s Lightship platform is the same engine Pokémon Go, Harry Potter Wizards Unite, and still under development CATAN: Explorers of the world. The game seeks to blend the familiarity of previous Niantic properties with a fun touch of nostalgia for those old enough to remember watching the Transformers cartoons in the mid-1980s (or Michael Bay’s treatment of films more recently).
A gradual rollout appears to be Niantic’s MO, as seen Pokémon Gofirst launch in Japan and CataniaNew Zealand’s first silent launch last year. Make sure to keep an eye out for a possible soft launch of Transformers: Heavy Metal soon in “select markets”, as well as its worldwide release later this year.
