Although most of us may know Michelin from its tires, it has thrown its hat into shipping in the name of sustainable mobility.
Company recently unveiled the Wing Sail Mobility (WISAMO) project, an automatic, telescopic, inflatable sailboat system that can be installed on most merchant and pleasure craft. Michelin designed and developed the sails in collaboration with two Swiss inventors.
“Benefit wind power is that wind energy is clean, free, universal and completely controversial, ”said project ambassador Michel Desjoyaux.
By harnessing wind power, sails use ships with lower fuel consumption and thus CO2 emissions. According to Michelin, the system can help improve the ship’s fuel efficiency by up to 20% and “can be used on all maritime routes”.
First The WISAMO system will be installed on the merchant ship in 2022 and will be put into production after the pilot phase. See below for how the system works.
