The difference between robotics and automation is almost non-existent, and yet there is a huge difference in everything like exhibitions, marketing, publications, academic conferences and magazines. This week, the difference was expressed as an opportunity in a letter from Professor Ken Goldberg, CITRIS CPAR and UC Berkeley under the Dear Collegegue, which suggested that students whose papers were rejected from the ICRA be reviewed by the CASE Conference, Automation Science and Technology Conference. . This opportunity was beautifully expressed in a quote from Professor Raja Chatila, former president of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Association and current leader of the IEEE Society for the Ethics of Independent and Intelligent Systems. “One robot on Mars is robotics, ten robots on Mars are automation.”

Dear colleagues,

ICRA today rejected more than 2,000 papers, including many that may be
effectively revised to another conference, such as the IEEE CASE (deadline 15
March).

The IEEE CASE, the annual conference on automation science and technology, is
a major IEEE conference, one of three fully supported IEEEs
conferences in our field (with ICRA and IROS).

In 2021, CASE will be held on 23-27. August. It’s a hybrid, live
component in Lyon, France and online component:

The IEEE CASE was founded in 2006, so it is smaller but growing rapidly.
the acceptance rate for the last case was about 56%, higher than the ICRA 2021
(48%), IROS or RSS. I find this feature not faulty: it is
an excellent place for exploratory and new projects.

The IEEE CASE continues the classic conference model, which includes 10-15 min
an oral presentation of each paper as opposed to poster folds. this is
especially exciting for students who gain valuable experience
lecturing and asking questions in front of an audience of their peers.

The IEEE CASE also has a tradition of rewarding candidates in the spotlight
such as best paper, best student paper, etc. Every named paper is
will be presented as a special individual session on the track on Day 1, where all
attends the conference and there is a lively Q&A led by judges.

The IEEE CASE emphasizes automation. Automation is very closely related
Robotics. There are considerable overlaps, but automation is emphasized
efficiency, sustainability, sustainability, safety, cost-effectiveness. Automation
also includes topics such as optimization and applications such as
transportation and mfg. I like the way RAS President Raj Chatila summed it up
relationship 10 years ago: “One robot on Mars has robotics, ten robots on top
Mars is automation. “

There are more than 100 university departments in China
focused on automation. Impact factor for IEEE events
Automation Science and Technology (T-ASE) is at the same level as T-RO this year
and higher than IJRR. Automation is important to take advantage of robotics
practice.
